Dance Gavin Dance sits down with DHN-TV
Let me present to you, Dance Gavin Dance — not that I need to. I’m sure you’ve probably heard of them. The post-hardcore group, formed in 2005, has had more than their fair share of drama and turmoil with the ever changing line-up. Despite that fact, the band has managed to release six incredibly successful records, performed numerous sold-out shows and assembled an incredibly loyal fan base. With the upcoming release, Tree City Sessions, a live record from their recent 10 year anniversary tour, this band refuses to be demolished by drama.
Recently at So What?! Music Fest, DHN-TV had a chance to sit down with original members od Dance Gavin Dance, Will and Matt, who spoke to us about their recent 10-year anniversary tour, being the only original remaining members of the band, their musical influences and announced their new album.
Without further delay, the interview.
So Matt and Will, you guys are some of the first members who are still in the band, right? How does it feel being 10 years down the road, still doing this and changing members and solidifying the band?
Everyday I wake up and I’m like ‘What have I done?! Hahaha”
No, it’s crazy, pretty trippy. It’s pretty surreal. It’s been a long time. Time flies too…
Yeah, it doesn’t seem that long. I just keep thinking “I’m gonna be dead pretty soon, I just started feeling like that like yesterday.”
Yeah, I remember listening to you guys in like 7th grade, you were one of the first bands I started listening to along with Johnny Craig. Speaking of Johnny Craig, I don’t want to get too much into him, but how did it feel to be on the 10 year anniversary tour with Slaves and A Lot Like Birds, making amends with all the bands that you had “beef” with? If it was even “beef”?
I mean, we never had beef with either of their bands. There was definitely some awkward time after their departures for each of them. But even that was just between us and the singer, not the whole band. After a while, we made amends but there wasn’t ever really beef, just the end of a business partnership which is weird. We’ve toured with both those bands before, and it’s just cool to have a homie tour wit all [the] people we know, not just some random people.
IT’S JUST COOL TO HAVE A HOMIE TOUR With ALL [the] PEOPLE WE KNOW…
You guys recorded a live album on that tour in Sacramento, which is coming out in May. Are you guys stoked for that?
Matt: Yeah, right after that tour, and May 13th. Yeah, it sounds neat. It’s cool to have some recordings of Tilian singing over some older songs. It’s pretty sweet.
You guys play at 5:55 today, but what other bands are you excited to see today?
Will: Saosin, Underoath,
Matt: I’m bummed because I haven’t seen Silverstein in a long time, but our set cuts into theirs. And then we have some other friends like Hail the Sun, but again their set cuts into ours, so we’ll probably miss them. And A Lot Like Birds. But it’s gonna be a good evening.
Will: It’s a good ass line-up, so many good bands playing.
So, did you guys enjoy yesterday?
Will: Well yeah, we didn’t really see anyone. We were busy.
Matt: I didn’t come yesterday because I went to the Knuckle Puck, Set Your Goals show Friday night and had a little too much fun that night.
Matt: Set Your Goals is tight, but I really like Knuckle Puck.
I can tell from the way you guys perform, instrumentally, that you guys are widely diverse. What are your influences in the bands?
Matt: Dude. All sorts of stuff. We all listen to different kinds of music, but the Deftones is a big influence for all of us.
Will: There was the early-to-mid 2000s wave of stuff and that was my heavy influence. But other than that, I listen to all kinds and try to incorporate that into DGD too, because it’s fun to mess around and makeup stuff instead of being one thing all the time.
Is there anything else you guys want to add?
Matt: YEAH! We hit the studio in April for a new album!
Will: I don’t think we’ve announced that yet,
Matt: Well, I don’t think so, but I don’t see why we can’t.
Will: …We just didn’t want to divert attention away from the love album announcement, but we’ll be hitting the studio soon!
WE JUST DIDN’T WANT TO DIVERT ATTENTION AWAY FROM THE LIVE ALBUM ANNOUNCEMENT, BUT WE’LL BE HITTING THE STUDIO SOON!
